Yarra Valley DJ Hire – Asian Wedding Traditions and Entertainment

Asia, as the largest continent, having five regions – East, West, South, South East and Central Asia respectively has the most diverse culture and people in the world. It is noteworthy to see that even here in Melbourne, our Asian brothers and sisters have found a second home away from home for our good nature and practice of pluralism when it comes to culture.

Part of the cultural immersion and experience is to witness their weddings and traditions. Asian Weddings provides a broader perspective and understanding of their culture. So hop in and let us be acquainted with Asian Wedding traditions.
  • Mhendi

Probably this one of the most recognisable from the people of India and adherents of Hinduism in South Asia. This is elaborately drawing intricately henna dye onto the bride’s skin; they say the thicker the colour of the dye the more loving would be the groom as well as the mother-in-law of the bride. However, some say the name of the groom is painstakingly kept and incorporated in the patterns, and the groom has to look for them – for patience.

  • Dam Hoi

It is a prevalent practice in Southeast Asia and East Asia to serve Tea prior to or during Wedding Ceremonies. Dam Hoi in Vietnam usually is a Tea Ceremony that signifies respect and sharing, particularly to parents of couples and their kin.

  • Berinai

” Henna staining” for Malaysian is done in three days (Berinai Curi, Berenai Kecil and Berenai Besar). First by relatives then neighbours and lastly by family members of the bride and groom; tracing it roots perhaps an Indian influence).

  • Releasing a female and male dove

Although some may not do this anymore in the Philippines, this signifies harmony in the married life of the couple.

  • Shell ceremony

This is part of Thai wedding whereby a conch shell as vessel for holy water is usually poured onto the hands of the couple.

  • Serving apples

It might have been missed, but one of the details in Chinese wedding tradition is serving apples. Why apples? Apples in Chinese is synonymous to the phrase “go safely”.

  • Baci Ceremony

A Laos wedding tradition of “spirit calling”, that of the ancestor, placing a” pha khuan” or centrepiece in the centre of the room. This “gathers” family members and the couple in preparation for the wedding.

After the elaborate and vibrant ceremony, usually Asian weddings has in most case, followed by a festivity or to an extent throughout is a celebration. Of course, dancing and singing are also welcome gestures. Although, elsewhere in the world other than here in Melbourne, our Asian brothers and sisters have embraced the first dance; but originally dances are done by the kin, groom’s men in Asian Cultures. Here are some observances:
  • Sangeet

Culturally wise, this is not an actual first dance but before the wedding ceremony sangeet (meaning sung together) is done by families of the bride and groom, and if there is music there is dancing.

  • Haldi

This is a mini-parade of the Hindu Groom usually comes along with dances but initially not the first dance.

  • Zaffe

Dancing, shouting before the wedding in Lebanon.

  • Money Dance

This is what comes close to first dance in the Philippines where while the couple dances the sponsors, guests and family members pin paper bills onto the garments of the newlyweds as a sign of prosperity.

  • Uyaoy

It is an Igorot (Northern Philippine Tribe) Dance performed during a wedding where Sakpaya Hawk’s movement is mimicked.
